“We are young but getting old before our time
We'll leave the T.V. and the radio behind
Don't you wonder what we'll find
Steppin' out tonight”
“Stepping Out” takes me back to the early 1980s, when I occasionally went out with my crazy brother. There was no telling where the night would take us: a punk club in the city, drinking cheap wine on a street corner, or hopping a fence to swim on a hot summer’s day. Nothing was ever planned and often dawn would see us home. But as the years go by, stepping out becomes more and more challenging. Am I getting old before my time?
Losing trust in our physical and mental abilities makes our world smaller. We lose confidence in exploring new adventures in unfamiliar environments. Modern technology brings almost everything to our fingertips. So it becomes easy to settle In a comfortable chair and let the world pass us by.
How do you prepare for the unknown and unexpected? For me, it’s a regular practice of the Feldenkrais Method®. Each lesson is an opportunity to learn and refine such skills as:
Being grounded
Centering yourself
Adjusting to your environment
Creating better balance and coordination
Moving in another direction
Imagination
More even distribution of work
Asking questions
Being your own best teacher
And being aware of the present moment
