Mia Segal was very passionate about the Feldenkrais Method® and classical music.  Often she would use the conductor of an orchestra as a metaphor to explain how the mind conducts the body.  Each of us has an inner conductor.  How we conduct ourselves will determine the quality of our lives.

Imagine Elaine from the TV show Steinfeld (who has no sense of rhythm or pitch), conducting an orchestra.  What would it sound like?  Probably, not too good.  Elaine would have no idea how to get the musicians to work together to create beautiful music.  Some parts would be played too fast while others would be too slow.  The chaotic volume shifts would make the music less powerful.  Musicians would be playing their parts at the wrong time. A good conductor is essential to ensure a large ensemble works together to create beautiful music.

Our nervous system is the inner conductor that supervises our actions.  Thoughts, feelings, sensations, nerves, muscles and bones all need to work together to fully realize our intentions.  When the conductor is distracted or lacks awareness, like Elaine, problems occur.

Imagine you are walking while watching a video on the phone.  Your inner  conductor is distracted.  Your head is tilted down and forward.  This causes skeletal misalignment.  Your muscles have to not only create movement, but also work harder against gravity.  When your arms and torso hold the phone in place, they  are unable to assist in walking.  Your feet and legs have to work harder and may become overstressed.  When you are not working together as a whole, overuse and stress creates injuries.  You can use your inner conductor to tell you to put the phone away, lift your head to see the horizon, feel your skeletal support from the ground to your head and swing your arms to make walking easier.  Now you are walking with more ease and efficiency.

A human being, like an orchestra, is one system.  This system is made up of many complex parts that need to work together to function properly.  Join S3NSE and discover your own inner conductor.  You will create some beautiful music with your life.
