“When our inner vision opens, our horizons expand.”
~Lousie Hay
Expanding your horizons empowers you to create a more diverse, exciting and fulfilling life. How is it done? By learning a new language? Maybe visiting a foreign land? Or joining a new group? What are you going to do and how are you going to do it?
Our inner vision guides us to how to figure out a goal that excites, energizes and/or stimulates our curiosity. This is something we really want to do. Yet, this is just the beginning of turning an intention into a reality.
Moshe Feldenkrais was very interested in how intentions are turned into actions. His book, “Awareness Through Movement” goes into great detail defining, explaining and providing examples of this process. A key component is the self-image, the image of the body that is mapped on the motor and sensory motor cortices of the brain. The book begins by stating, “We act in accordance with our self-image.”
The vast majority of people have an incomplete self image. This means some parts of the self image are missing, deleted, exaggerated, distorted or overgeneralized. By using awareness of one’s movement, Feldenkrais discovered that it is possible to improve and refine the motor and sensory-motor maps within the brain and thus, improve our abilities.
These maps operate similar to the operating system in a computer. Each Feldenkrais lesson acts like a software update to enhance and enlarge our somatic maps. This enables us to create more potent actions. Every action contains the components of thinking, sensing, feeling and moving. When one improves, the others also benefit. If you move smoothly and gracefully, you may also feel lighter and calmer. In time, these somatic map upgrades become integrated into your everyday actions.
