awareness through movement®
Awareness Through Movement (ATM) are group classes guided by verbal directions that investigate specific movement themes. Students are encouraged to reduce effort and speed in order to increase their sensitivity and awareness. As the lesson progresses students learn how to organize more of themselves into their actions. Sequences that were challenging in the beginning become graceful and effortless. There are hundreds of ATM lessons that have roots in developmental movement, judo and other martial arts, yoga, meditation, visualization, gymnastics, calisthenics and functional motor patterns. These lessons use a variety of positions (lying, sitting, standing and kneeling) to create specific settings for new learning and personal growth. The usual duration for ATM classes are 45 minutes to an hour.
